Alpha provides social recreation programs for youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities under the umbrella of Katie's FUNd. These programs are offered free-of-charge other than costs associated with activates, such as movie tickets or meals at restaurants.
Both programs seek to provide community integration and self-advocacy training based primarily in community settings. This allows for skills to be gained in natural settings with support from trained staff.
Teen Extreme
The youth program is for individuals aged 13-18. Events take place on weekends and evenings. It is an opportunity to foster relationships with peers and learn skills necessary for increased independence.
EXPO
The adult program is for individuals 18 and over. Events take place on weekends and evenings as well as weekdays during the day. It is an opportunity to build upon skills, increase independence, and spend time in the community with peers and community members.
(While both programs provide limited support with activities of daily living and self-care, participants do need some level of independence. These programs are not a fit for individuals who require regular 1:1 support or who exhibit moderate to severe behavioral challenges.)
Katie’s FUNd was established in July 2003 in partnership with the Janeway Family.
It honors the determination and passion for life of Katie Janeway,
a 14-year-old with developmental disabilities who died tragically in 2002.
